AAABA stepping stone to majors

                                                                 "The Tribune-Democrat, Saturday August 11, 1990

Scouts from all 26 major league teams will attend the 1990 All American Amateur Baseball Association Tournament to scan the teams for future big leaguers.

Oral Hershiser, Steve Garvey, Reggie Jackson, Bob Welch, Joe Torre and Al Kaline are just a few of the big names that have played in the tournament.

From the 45 previous AAABA tournaments, 235 players have advanced to the major leagues and at least twice that many have played in the minors.

Detroit, which usually has a lot of collegiate players on its roster, has had the most major leaguers with 52. Baltimore is second with 37 and Washington, D.C., is third with 24.

Kaline, who went directly to the Detroit Tigers from the AAABA tournament, became the youngest player to win an American League in batting in 1955. He is also a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Former Brooklyn player Joe Torre was named National League MVP in 1971 while playing with the St. Louis Cardinals. He later managed the Mets and the Braves and has recently been hired to manage the Cardinals.

Johnstown’s Pete Vuckovich was the 1982 American League Cy Young Award winner with Milwaukee and now broadcasts the Brewers games.

Other former tournament players now managing are Buck Rodgers of Montreal and Tom Kelly of Minnesota.
